A deep dive into the 13th Tribe:  The Khazar Empire ruled the strategic corridor between the Black and Caspian Seas from the seventh to thirteenth centuries, commanding armies, controlling trade routes, and blocking Arab expansion into Eastern Europe. Around 740 AD, its ruling class made a decision unique in medieval history: they converted to Judaism, choosing a faith that kept them independent of both Christian Byzantium and the Islamic Caliphate. When the empire collapsed under pressure from the Rus and Mongol invasions, its Jewish population migrated westward into Poland-Lithuania, where they established the shtetls, occupational patterns, and cultural practices that defined Eastern European Jewish life for centuries. Koestler's thesis is that these Khazar migrants — not small, repeatedly massacred Rhineland communities — formed the demographic backbone of Ashkenazi Jewry.

The evidence converges from multiple directions. Yiddish contains no western German dialects from the Rhine Valley, deriving instead from eastern Alpine regions consistent with formation in Eastern Europe. Anthropological data shows Jewish populations resembling their local neighbours more than each other — German Jews matching Germans, Polish Jews matching Poles — demolishing any claim of racial unity. Place names of Khazar origin dot the migration routes from Ukraine to Poland. The distinctive "pagoda-style" synagogues, silk kaftans, fox-fur hats, and monopoly on horse-drawn carting all trace to steppe traditions rather than Middle Eastern origins. Meanwhile, the small Jewish communities of medieval Western Europe — numbering in the hundreds, devastated by Crusade massacres and Black Death pogroms — lacked the demographic capacity to produce the millions of Jews who appeared in Eastern Europe during the same centuries those western communities were being destroyed.   A fascinating tale.
